The most of Indonesian coal resources are dominated by low rank. This coal is created some problems in utilization as combustion. To anticipate this case, the research had been carried out to Berau coal located in East Kalimantan. The research method consist of characterization and the experimentation to upgrade the quality of Berau coal in the laboratory.
The characterization including the observation of geological condition and coal sampling, while the experimentation is caried out in the laboratory for increasing or upgrading the quality of this coal by heating method. The parameters used in this experiment were the particle size of 8;16; 24 mesh with the temperature of 250oC and heating time of 120 minutes. Based on the observation of geological condition in the field indicated that the coal bearing formation is MioceneLatih Formation in Tarakan basin. The Latih Formation indicated that this Formation consisted of the interbedded between clay stone, silt and coal. While according to the experimentation show that the finer the particle size, the higher the reducing of inherent moisture in the coal. The upgrading of Berau coal by heating method increasing the caloric value from 4,673 to 5,417 kcal/g.
