Indonesia was known as the oil exporter country of the world. yet, Indonesia is now turned into an oil importer country. This is Because the oil production can’t keep pace with domestic demand.
Since the era has begin to be modern with increasingly sophisticated technology, Indonesia has an opportunity to develop Unconventional Energy named oil shale. Oil shale is a shale rock that contains organic substances and when It is heated at high temperature, it will break down and produce hydrocarbons liquid which has similarity to crude oil. One of the potential Oil shale is in Upper Telisa Formation, West Sumatra. Based on the literature studies and data from several sources, hypothetical resource is estimated to be more than 2.800 million tonnes rock or equal to approximately 421.483.922 barrel of shale oil in Place. Therefore, This paper attempts to answer a major challenge in producing oil shale by using In-Situ Conversion Process, then shale oil can be taken conventionally. Oil shale is expected to meet the needs of fossils energy in Indonesia and improve National Energy Security.
From the literature studies and existing data, it is expected to oil shale in Padang Lawas can be taken into consideration for being explored. Further study is needed and followed by exploration activity which is urgently required.
